Ye Olde Man & Scythe is a 12th Century tavern in Churchgate, at the heart of Bolton town centre. Renound locally as 'T' Cider 'ouse,' the pub is rich in character and history. We even have our very own ghost-in-residence! Welcome to the Man & Scythe!
Dating back to 1251, the inn is one of the oldest in the world. It is perhaps most famous for hosting James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby, who took his last meal here before stepping outside to be beheaded.
You can read all about the fascinating history of the inn here on this site, take a virtual tour or book a real tour of this international landmark. One day John Jewitt, the landlord, asked a group of Americans: "Who told you about the pub?" The answer was, of course, "Our neighbours in Arizona!"
